2026 action plan · I

Conservation & ecosystems

Protecting the coast begins with knowing it. Mission 1 brings together biodiversity inventories on land and at sea, mapping of key habitats — Posidonia, Cystoseira, coastal dunes — and the monitoring of stranding events. It forms the scientific foundation of the national report on the state of the coastline.

Actions

Safeguarding and enhancing the coastline and coastal ecosystems

Coastal biodiversity inventory

Objective

Strengthen scientific knowledge of the coastline to support conservation, the national report, and the monitoring of marine and terrestrial habitats.

Activities
  • Build a database of notable coastal species (terrestrial and marine).
  • Literature review and mapping of key habitats (Posidonia, Cystoseira, dunes).
Indicators
  • Number of species inventoried
  • Number of habitats catalogued
  • Number of antennas involved
Expected results
  • Biodiversity and habitats database created.
  • Thematic maps produced.

Mapping of sensitive coastal areas

Objective

Identify and map sensitive coastal areas in a simplified way to provide an operational, up-to-date and shared overview.

Activities
  • Develop a uniform simplified methodological brief.
  • Identify areas exposed to erosion, submersion and pollution.
  • Produce maps of sensitive areas for each wilaya.
Indicators
  • Number of sensitive areas identified
  • Number of maps produced
  • Updated GIS database
Expected results
  • National directory of sensitive coastal areas.
  • Methodology validated and applied by the antennas.
  • Operational maps for each wilaya.

Identification and monitoring of stranded species

Objective

Improve knowledge of stranding events and strengthen environmental watch.

Activities
  • Collect and centralise stranding data.
  • Build a national database.
  • Develop or improve technical sheets (brown algae, turtles, etc.).
  • Organise targeted information days.
  • Map the location of stranded species along the coast.
Indicators
  • Number of stranded species recorded
  • Number of technical sheets produced
  • Number of information days organised
Expected results
  • Strengthened national stranding database.
